Events

Pocahontas County hosts many events throughout the year for the whole family, ranging from Farmers Markets and Golf Tournaments to Halloween Hikes and Rodeos.

Attractions

Pocahontas County is centrally located and convenient to a large variety of local and nearby activities and attractions.

The communities and countryside of the area have abundant recreation opportunities with a short drive to Fort Dodge, Storm Lake, Emmetsburg, Okoboji, Spirit Lake, and Spencer.

Pocahontas County Conservation maintains several parks around the county.  These parks may be used for several activities including but not limited to hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, hiking, camping, swimming, bird watching, biking, and GeoCaching.  The Conservation Department also maintains and develops several public environmental education programs.

The Alvin Straight House is located on Section Line Road in Laurens, IA. Alvin Straight (1921-1996) lived quietly until he went on an unusual journey that put him in the spotlight. The Laurens resident took a 240-mile road trip — on a lawn mower. At 73, Straight wanted to see his brother, Henry, whom he hadn't spoken to for almost a decade. This true story was made into a big screen movie in 1999 called THE STRAIGHT STORY.

Bowling - There are two bowling allies located in Pocahontas County. Both provide league bowling along with family fun bowling and food. Family Fun Zone, 230 N Main St., Pocahontas; and Laurens Lounge and Lanes, 118 South Third Street, Laurens

Camping - There are several camping locations within Pocahontas County. Pocahontas County Conservation maintains several parks with camping facilities. These facilities vary from modern to primitive services.

Elbert Park is located in Pocahontas north of the County Courthouse. Elbert Park has RV and tent camping with the city swimming pool, playground, playground equipment, baseball/softball diamonds, sand volleyball, soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts nearby. The camp ground provides full RV hookup with water and sewer. There are no showers at this location.

Straight Park is a wonderful area of Fonda that has a pit for fishing, a park for picnics, and camping facilities.

Community Chorus - The Community Chorus is open to any adult who has a love for fun and good music. The Chorus performs an annual spring show. For more information Contact: Kevin Brandt, President, 712-335-4005

DNR/State Parks & Properties

Golfing - Golfing can be enjoyed at golf courses located in Pocahontas, Laurens, Fonda, and Rolfe.

Gotch State Park is located approximately 25 miles east of Pocahontas, IA. Frank A. Gotch Park is a 61-acre park just three miles south of Humboldt. The park is located near the homestead of the early 1900s wrestling champion Frank A. Gotch. This park contains 30 campsites, a rental shelter, playground equipment, and a boat ramp. Gotch Park is connected to the Three Rivers Trail.

The Grotto of the Redemption - Near Saint Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in West Bend, nine grottos tell the story of Redemption through Christ. Every imaginable colorful mineral and crystal has been incorporated into this miraculous mound. There are few rocks found in west-central Iowa, so Father Dobberstein traveled to the mineral havens of Hot Springs and the South Dakota's Black Hills in search of materials for his vision.

Horseback Riding - The Fonda Saddle Club has several horse enthusiastic members who enjoy a wide variety of horse activities including trail riding and driving.The Fonda Saddle Club riding arena is locatedon the south side of Fonda just off of Main Street. This is also home to the Fonda Sale Barn and Fonda Rodeo.

Horseback riding can also be done at the Pocahontas County Fairgrounds outdoor arena.

The Indian Princess - The statue of Pocahontas is located on Hwy 3, East of Pocahontas.

Iowa's Great Lakes

Manson Meridian Singers - This organization is based in Manson but includes singers and musicians from neighboring and surrounding communities. The Singers was established in 1972 and entertains with quality musical productions in January and February.

Movie Theater - The Rialto is located on Main St in Pocahontas.

Museums

Gib Alpers Museum is located on Main Street in Fonda. At one point in time this building was a prominent theatre in the community. The museum is open by appointment and throughout the summer.

Laurens Carnegie Library & Pocahontas County Historical Museum
The Laurens Carnegie Library and Pocahontas County Historical Museum are located on Main Street in Laurens near the swimming pool. This old library is listed with the National Historical Register of Historic Places. The museum is open by appointment on weekends during the summer.

Old Rolfe and Old Rolfe Cemetery – Old Rolfe is the original site and location of the Pocahontas County Courthouse. Old Rolfe is located in the Des Moines Township, section 26, northeast of Rolfe on 325th Avenue.

Pocahontas County Barn Quilts - This unique project creates a unique type of art, reminiscent of the old Mail Pouch Tobacco advertisements of days gone by. Our historic barns and corncribs feature colorful quilt blocks with ties to rural life.

Swimming - Community swimming pools are located in the cities of Pocahontas, Laurens, Fonda, and Rolfe.

Three Rivers Trail connecting three counties of Pocahontas, Humboldt, and Wright Counties.

The Three Rivers Trail is a 30-mile rails-to-trails system. The trail starts in Rolfe, IA and crosses through Humboldt to Eagle Grove.  The trail crosses the Boone river, the west and east fork of the Des Moines River and runs through various habitats from the wooded river sides to the open farm and prairie lands. Activities on the trail range from walking/hiking and biking during the summer months to cross country skiing and snowmobiling during the winter.

Twin Lakes - North and South Twin Lakes offers everything from boating, skiing, swimming, biking, camping, fishing, and golfing in the spring and summer months, and tobogganing, ice skating, cross country skiing and hunting throughout the fall and winter. A seven-mile bike/walk trail is currently under construction at North Twin Lake. Visitors can explore one of the 30 designated County parks and wildlife areas or the numerous municipal parks and recreation facilities throughout Calhoun County.

Veterans Monument - The monument’s anticipated dedication date is July 4, 2006. Plans are to have the proposed monument located in the front of the south entrance of the Pocahontas County Courthouse.
